John Espinoza Nelson

TOPIC-His memoir, Where Excuses Go To Die

About John Nelson:

John Espinoza Nelson , accomplished author and prison expert, is now known as the “No Excuses” guy. But in 1990, young John pursued his worst ideas and learned first-hand about crime and punishment. The LAPD called him the Bookstore Bandit and later collared him robbing banks. Based on a crazy conversation with a former girlfriend, his ill-chosen casual crime spree contrasted painfully with his engaging and law-abiding, upper-middle class family. Now, decades later, John provides informed insight and surprising humor about his journey through the place where excuses go to die.

Unlike thousands of inmates, John beat the odds and made his four years in prison a time of real personal growth. He is now an expert on avoiding recidivism and surviving the failed penal system. With such life experiences under his belt, John speaks compellingly to adults and pre-adults alike, offering credible advice for parents and children to keep from acting on their own worst ideas in the course of growing up. John lives with his wife in his beloved city of Los Angeles, CA.

His memoir, Where Excuses Go To Die is An edgy, smart, coming-of-age story that while mostly set in prison, also provides a real look at family and personal evolution. John’s journey as a writer began with prison essay competitions and continued after his release, from working with the U.S. Veterans Initiative, to DreamWorks and Maverick Records, to writing contracts with Mattel Toys. John has been published in Esquire, Details, Players, the LA Weekly, and on numerous web assets.
