“It's an amazing and awful thing, how much a death can shred you—how when one person dies, he can hold the living hostage forever,” said Ellison when asked why she wrote her novel. “I watched members of my own family become near-zombies after the shocking and tragic death of my uncle's parents. And I watched my cousin evolve in this environment of post-traumatic stress and grief, clinging to rituals and superstitions as though they might save her.”
