WHY: In advance of Memorial Day and the kickoff of the summer travel season, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) wants to help Americans counter costly gas prices and keep money in their pockets. As part of the 11th annual National Tire Safety Week (June 3-9), they want motorists to know that the simple task of keeping their tires properly inflated and maintained can help them save substantially at the pump.
With the average national gas price still close to $4 a gallon, travel can be expensive. However, motorists can save as much as 12 cents per gallon at the pump and help their tires last longer with simple monthly tire maintenance.
Unfortunately not enough drivers take advantage of this easy money-saving solution. According to an RMA survey of drivers across the country, only 15% of Americans properly check their tire pressure – inflating their gas bills and increasing their risk for accidents. RMA offers tips that will help motorists save money and help them stay safe.
The RMA survey revealed that motorists have a lot to learn when it comes to proper tire care:
• 62% of drivers don’t know where to find the correct inflation pressure for their vehicle’s tires
• 43% of drivers don’t know that tires should be checked “cold” – before driving, rather than after
driving
• 60% of drivers wash their cars once a month, only 15% properly check tire pressure once a month
• 20% of men surveyed vs. 9% of women are “tire smart”
