New Study Finds Average Child Receives 90 Pieces of Candy, Most Parents Say That’s Too Much
The American Dental Association (ADA) and PopCap Games announced the results of a new survey targeting U.S. parents of trick-or-treating age kids (5 to 13 years old), looking at views and perceptions of Halloween. Approximately 94% of all American children participate in trick-or-treating, but the survey results signify parents of kids that age want more and better options where treats are concerned. Among the top findings, the average child receives just over 90 pieces of candy on Halloween and 70% of parents agree it would be good if their children received less candy and more non-candy treats. This year, that’s a real possibility, through the PopCap and ADA “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign which includes the giveaway of millions of coupons redeemable for free copies of the family-friendly hit PopCap® game Plants vs. Zombies®.
“The fact that the majority of parents believe their children receive and consume too much candy around Halloween is encouraging,” said Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, ADA spokesperson on pediatric dentistry. “With the Stop Zombie Mouth campaign we’re providing a fun alternative to sugary treats while further raising awareness of the importance of oral health among parents and children at this critical time of the year. Tooth decay can be prevented through basic steps such as brushing twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, yet only 44% of children brush twice daily.”

Halloween Family Activities
For parents, the most enjoyable aspects of Halloween as a parent are “Trick-or-treating with my child(ren)” (74% of all respondents); “Having fun with family” (51%) and “Decorating the house” (47%). “Dressing up in costume” and “Pumpkin carving” rounded out the top five responses, with 43% and 41%, respectively.
Parents: Less Sugar, More Fun
70% of responding parents agreed with the statement “If my child received less candy and more of other kinds of treats, that would be good”; 59% agree that “my children eat too much candy around Halloween.” Among those parents whose children have visited a dentist three or more times to have a cavity filled, 71% said their children eat too much candy around Halloween.
Too Much Candy
According to all parents surveyed, candy represents 86.5% of all treats their children receive while trick-or-treating; 77% of parents reported that their children receive more than 50 pieces of candy while trick-or-treating on Halloween. 30% receive more than 100 pieces of candy, and the average for across all children is 90.9 pieces of candy received.
Tooth-Friendly Alternatives for Treats
Three quarters (75%) of parents surveyed would prefer their child receive a free video game instead of a piece of candy on Halloween. (Among parents whose children have visited a dentist three or more times to have a cavity filled, fully 86% indicated they’d prefer their children receive a free video game.)
Announced earlier this month, the “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign will continue through Halloween, and provides parents, dentists and other adults with trading cards and coupons redeemable for free copies of PopCap’s family friendly hit video game, Plants vs. Zombies, which can be given away to trick-or-treaters as a tooth-friendly alternative to candy. Already, thousands of ADA member dentists nationwide have ordered Stop Zombie Mouth kits to give away to their patients.
Survey Methodology
This research was conducted by Information Solutions Group (ISG; www.infosolutionsgroup.com) exclusively for PopCap Games and the American Dental Association (ADA). The results are based on 1,043 online surveys completed by members of the world’s largest online ePanel (Toluna) in the United States between September 14 and September 18, 2012. To qualify for participation in the survey, individuals had to live in the U.S., have at least one child between 5 and 13 years old and allow their children to go trick-or-treating on Halloween. Among U.S. households, 1,099 were identified as parents of children 5 to 13 years old, with 1,043 (94%) allowing their children to trick-or treat on Halloween. In theory, in 19 cases out of 20, the results will differ by no more than 2.1 percentage points from what would have been obtained by seeking out and polling all U.S. households with children 5 to 13 years old. Smaller subgroups reflect larger margins of sampling error. Other sources of error, such as variations in the order of questions or the wording within the questionnaire, may also contribute to different results.

Jack Caravelli, Senior Analyst
Dr. Jack Caravelli has had extensive experience in both the intelligence and policymaking sides of the US government. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency as a Soviet strategic forces analyst in 1982 and spent the next fourteen years with the Agency in various analytic, staff and managerial positions. In 1996 he was selected to serve on the White House National Security Council Staff as Director for Nonproliferation with responsibility to the president for the formation of US nonproliferation policy on Russia and the Middle East. In 2000 he moved to the Department of Energy to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the department's nonproliferation threat reduction programs on Russia and other states of the former Soviet Union. Since leaving government service in 2005, Caravelli has remained active in various national security activities. He is the author of several books on nonproliferation and foreign policy issues and co-editor of a book on strategizing resilience. Caravelli is a Visiting Professor at the UK Defense Academy and lectures at Oxford University where he is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Pluscarden Program on Intelligence and Terrorism. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Georgetown University .

Last Call for Kansas Farmers to Help Nonprofit Organizations through America’s Farmers Grow Communities
Community members can now encourage farmers to support their cause
ST. LOUIS (Nov. 1, 2012) –For the third consecutive year, America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives eligible farmers the opportunity to win a $2,500 donation to direct to their favorite local nonprofit organization. Farmers can enter between now and Nov. 30 for their chance to help a nonprofit in need.
This year, the entire community has a voice. Rural community members can suggest a local nonprofit idea or initiative that needs funding in their local community. Farmers may review the ideas and consider them in their entry. Those who wish to plant an idea and encourage farmers to support their cause can do so at www.growcommunities.com.
Since launching in 2010, the Monsanto Fund has invested more than $7 million in rural America through Grow Communities. In Kansas, at least $220,000 will be distributed among 88 counties. In 2012, Kansas farmers directed:
$80,000 to ag youth
$27,500 to fire/emergency services
$37,500 to community improvement
$40,000 to education
$35,000 to service organizations
“Farmers have really stepped up to the plate since launching Grow Communities in 2010 and have thoughtfully chosen thousands of deserving organizations to receive the $2,500 donations,” said Deborah Patterson, Monsanto Fund president. “New this year, we are pleased to offer rural community members the opportunity to voice their ideas and help farmers strengthen the towns where they live and work.”
Additionally, winning farmers from counties that have been declared natural disaster areas due to the drought by the USDA will have an opportunity to direct an additional $2,500 donation to a local nonprofit to address community needs that have surfaced due to the drought. To date, more than 700 counties have been declared disasters areas within the 1,271 eligible Grow Communities counties.
Now through Nov. 30, 2012, farmers can enter online, and rural community members can submit their ideas at www.growcommunities.com or by calling 1-877-267-3332.The Monsanto Fund will select one winner at random from each of the eligible counties and announce winning farmers and recipient nonprofits in January 2013.
Eligible counties in Kansas include Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Barton, Bourbon, Brown, Butler, Chase, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Decatur, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Edwards, Finney, Ford, Franklin, Gove, Graham, Grant, Gray, Greeley, Greenwood, Harvey, Haskell, Jackson, Jefferson, Jewell, Johnson, Kearny, Kingman, Kiowa, Labette, Leavenworth, Lincoln, Linn, Logan, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Meade, Miami, Mitchell, Montgomery, Morris, Morton, Nemaha, Neosho, Norton, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Pawnee, Phillips, Pottawatomie, Pratt, Rawlins, Reno, Republic, Rice, Riley, Rooks, Saline, Scott, Sedgwick, Seward, Shawnee, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Stafford, Stanton, Stevens, Sumner, Thomas, Wabaunsee, Wallace, Washington, Wichita, Wilson and Woodson.

SUNFLOWER DEAD hail from the Southern California Metal/Hard Rock scene and are no strangers to having their brand of music draw attention. The band is a rebirth of sorts. Three-fifths of the band rise from the ashes of former nationally recognized touring acts DROID and Two Hit Creeper. They are rounded out by additional band members who have toured internationally with Buckethead and In This Moment. Their former bands have earned national recognition by touring alongside Korn, Linkin Park and the Vans Warped Tour. SUNFLOWER DEAD are no strangers to the commitment needed or drive required to win over fans with their own brand of hard rock.

Jack Caravelli, Senior Analyst
Dr. Jack Caravelli has had extensive experience in both the intelligence and policymaking sides of the US government. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency as a Soviet strategic forces analyst in 1982 and spent the next fourteen years with the Agency in various analytic, staff and managerial positions. In 1996 he was selected to serve on the White House National Security Council Staff as Director for Nonproliferation with responsibility to the president for the formation of US nonproliferation policy on Russia and the Middle East. In 2000 he moved to the Department of Energy to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the department's nonproliferation threat reduction programs on Russia and other states of the former Soviet Union. Since leaving government service in 2005, Caravelli has remained active in various national security activities. He is the author of several books on nonproliferation and foreign policy issues and co-editor of a book on strategizing resilience. Caravelli is a Visiting Professor at the UK Defense Academy and lectures at Oxford University where he is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Pluscarden Program on Intelligence and Terrorism. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Georgetown University .

He has augmented this with studies in Homeric, Ancient and Modern Greek, as well as in Sanskrit, the Semitic languages, and Japanese. His studies were sped along by his having tested out of a complete year of college.

T.S. Wiley is the author of “Sex, Lies & Menopause,” Harper Collins, 2003, the hypothesis of which explains why postponing marriage and motherhood, women have accelerated the aging process and put themselves in the bull's eye for breast cancer. The book also examines the introduction of the birth control pill in the early 1960’s and the impact of not breast-feeding our young. In her previous book, “Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival, ” Pocket Books, Simon and Schuster, 2000, Wiley succinctly and logically argues that electricity and the light bulb put us out of sync with nature as the ultimate "endocrine disruptors". People spent summers, before electric lights, sleeping less and eating heavily in preparation for winter because the light triggered the hunger for carbohydrates. Now, light is available 24 hours a day. Heating and air-conditioning climate control our hormonal responses to consume carbohydrates now available year round. This is the scenario for obesity, Type II diabetes, and depression. In Wiley’s opinion, sleep is the best medicine. T.S. Wiley has also published peer-reviewed scientific papers in molecular oncology and endocrinology, as well as lecturing globally and teaching physicians Environmental Endocrinology in Planetarium settings around the world. Her newest work in process is "Manthropology", exploring how medicine and modern life are killing men.
