Icarus Line

Icarus Line

lave Vows, the fifth album from Los Angeles hellions The Icarus Line, is their best yet. The Stooge-ian roar of a band that refuses to die, the new album captures lead singer/producer Joe Cardamone and his charges at their most alive, across songs that slither, lash and rise into venomous crescendos, dark and heroic and seductive and seething. Recorded at Cardamone's own Valley Recording Company studio in Burbank, California, Slave Vows is released on August 6 in the U.S. on Agitated Records. I'm hoping you'll consider covering via feature or album review. Please let me know if you need the music. Slave Vows distils The Icarus Line's past, present and future into 8 tracks and 45 minutes of profoundly uncompromised rock'n'roll; it hurtles from the malevolent glower of opener 'Dark Circles', to the slow, corrosive ooze of "Marathon Man," to the savage explosion of "Dead Body," to the Sabbath-plays-Funkadelic writhe of "Rat's Ass." "Rock'n'roll has been turned into this, like, Motley Crue charade, a parade of fucking dicks," sighs Joe Cardamone. "It's the 80s again. It's crazy how everything I love has been driven back into the underground. That's where we came from, and that's where we've ended up, and anything else good is back down there too." Already released in the U.K. It's been getting some great press including in Kerrang (pictured left) and Mojo (pictured right) and I'm including a small sampling of other U.K. press that's appeared. All of this changes when Maria Hernandez–an immigrant from Spain–comes to Peach Valley Senior High. Maria knows what it takes to fit in. She’s assertive, confident and she dresses suggestively, characteristics that all of the popular kids admire. Yet she sees in Anya what no one else sees: beauty and talent. When Maria extends her hand of friendship, Anya is elated. Her rise to popularity is about to become a reality, but it ends at a house party when a boy’s rude comment sends her into a rage. Desperate to belong somewhere, Anya and Maria seek new friends outside of school. They meet Alex and Marissa, a young couple who eagerly welcomes them into their world of parties and drugs. Anya and Maria soon find out that Alex is a drug dealer, but they are so lured by his wealth, good looks and aggressive confidence that they can’t resist his friendship. Nonpopint

Robert Rivera-Nonpoint

Nothing can stop Nonpoint. The band continues to deliver unique, uncompromising, and undeniable hard rock on its self-titled ninth studio album and first for Razor & Tie. Weathering lineup changes, label shifts, and other trials and tribulations, founding members Elias Soriano [vocals] and Robb Rivera [drums] regrouped with fresh blood—Dave Lizzio [guitar], Adam Wolosyzn [bass], and Rasheed Thomas [guitar]—and captured pure fire this time around. Now, you might just get burned if you’re in their way… In the spring of 2012, Nonpoint experienced something of a rebirth. After touring heavily behind Miracle, they underwent a creative overhaul with the addition of Lizzio, Wolosyzn, and Thomas. At the same time, Rivera stresses that preserving the outfit’s initial integrity proved paramount to songwriting. “Basically, we wanted to go back to where we came from,” he affirms. “Take our first four albums, throw them in a blender, and this is what you get. Elias wrote some of his deepest lyrics and spit rage in the booth. When it came to the guitars, Dave and Rasheed brought in genuine technical talent. It’s old school with some new flavors.” Soriano adds, “We wanted this record to be a punch in the face. Dealing with lawyers and losing members, the last year was obviously very difficult. I also had just become a father around the same time. There was a lot of stuff I wanted to artistically vent about.” In order to transfer that energy to tape, they enlisted the talents of Grammy Award-nominated producer Johnny K [Disturbed, Staind, Megadeth] for the first time. They holed up in his Groovemaster Recording Studios in February 2012 and emerged with 12 of the most raw and real songs of their 15-year career. Johnny pushed them to expand their patented sound, while simultaneously sticking to their guns. “He challenged each of us instrumentally,” Rivera elaborates. “He brought out anger and angst that we haven’t felt in a long time. We’re known as a live act, and he paid attention to that fact. We built this on the road. This record sounds like war coming out of the speakers.” The first single “Left For You” slides from an intense riff into a hypnotic verse punctuated by an infectious chorus. Produced and mixed by Brian Virtue [30 Seconds to Mars, Chevelle] in Nashville, it’s immediately explosive. Lyrically, the singer doesn’t hold anything back either. “It’s about that moment where being discreet or cordial gets thrown out the window,” he reveals. “You realize you’re fighting for a relationship—whether it’s romantic, business, or social—that you don’t really want anymore. You say fuck it and never revisit that friendship again.” Nonpoint opened up the floodgates to the album by unleashing one of its heaviest tracks, “I Said It,” as a free download their Facebook page in the summer of 2012. The fans responded with overwhelming enthusiasm, welcoming the onslaught. Showcasing dynamic vocal delivery and a groove-driven stomp, it’s perfect for the pit. “We set the DNA of the record with that song,” the vocalist smiles. “It’s very aggressive and in-your-face. You can think of it as ‘Bullet with a Name 2012’. It’s a good old fashioned Nonpoint song you can bang in the gym.” As a whole, the album feels like a declaration for the band. They’ve never given up, and it’s not even an option. This is who they are, and they’re making music which reflects their spirit. “It’s a fresh start for us,” Soriano states. “We felt like having a self-titled record says it all. We hit the reset button, and there’s life again. You can hear it musically. We’re not going anywhere.” In addition, they remain one of the most consistent and incendiary live acts on the scene. Having shared the stage with everyone from Sevendust and Stone Sour to Papa Roach and Buckcherry as well as appearing at festivals such as OZZfest and the UK’s Download, each performance stands out as an experience their fan base fervently follows. The quintet also inked a deal with Razor & Tie in 2011, setting the stage for this next phase. “It was the most natural thing,” says Rivera. “They have an incredible team, and they sought us out. We’re experienced to begin this chapter together.” Over the course of their nine previous releases, Nonpoint sold over 750,000 albums in North America alone. In addition to fan favorites like “What a Day” and “Circles”, their biggest radio hit to date “Bullet With a Name” reached #22 on the Mainstream Rock Charts and was featured in the hit video game WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 as well as the 2007 film The Condemned. Meanwhile, their cover of Phil Collins’s “In the Air Tonight” was the theme song for the film Miami Vice and hit the Mainstream Rock Charts. At the end of the day, Rivera wants to give back via the music. “We try to help people through our art,” he exclaims. “So many kids have connected to our songs over the years, and they’ve supported us unconditionally. We fought through so much, and we never gave up. I hope they get a positive message from this album.” Soriano concludes, “It doesn’t feel like we have some kind of goal. It feels like we have a purpose, which is to put out hopeful music. When this process started, a fuse got lit. We’re not stopping until it all burns.” Their flame will only rise higher. 10 Years

10 Years

TOPIC-
Seether, 10 Years, Eye Empire at The Cotillion

After a year and a half on the road touring 2010’s Feeding The Wolves, 10 Years reached a turning point. It was time to move forward and take full control of their career by launching their own label, Palehorse Records. In addition, the band decided to self-produce their fourth album, Minus the Machine, at drummer/guitarist Brian Vodinh’s Kashmir Recording. Splitting up with a major label after five years was “a very scary step to take,” Hasek admits. “It’s like breaking up with a longtime girlfriend. You’re used to the motions, but when it becomes stale and unhappy, you need to move on and get energy back into your life. There was no anger on either side. We just painlessly parted ways.” Working together as a band for the first time since writing the Gold-selling album The Autumn Effect helped 10 Years go back to their roots, without label-enforced pressure to create a radio-friendly “hit,” and free to experiment with the hard rock sounds that lie at the core of their music. “Our true fans who buy the albums, not just the singles, understand that our singles, for the most part, misrepresent the entire album,” says Hasek. “As a band, we like to explore more and go a little left of center with song structures. We wanted to create an album that has no boundaries, and where we didn’t have to make every song ‘three minutes and 30 seconds’ for a label to approve it. There’s a fine line with that, of course, and we’re very aware of it. We all grew up on rock music, and as many albums as we’ve written, the way we’ve written them, it’s ingrained in us to work within a time frame that fits radio. There are definitely songs that work well for that, but as a whole, we wanted this album to represent a journey in a sense.” This chapter of 10 Years began in 2001, when Hasek took over as vocalist. Three years later they released their independent album, Killing All That Holds You, featuring the groundbreaking single “Wasteland,” which led to their signing with Universal Records. “That song was created in 2001 or 2002,” says Hasek. “We weren’t seeking to write a smash single. We were just writing music.” The Autumn Effect (2005) led to widespread radio and video play, a fiercely loyal fan base, and tours with heavyweights like Linkin Park, Korn and the Deftones. When their sophomore effort, Division, was released in 2008, 10 Years had cemented their place as one of hard rock’s top contenders and most sought-after live bands. Still, says Hasek, despite the success, “it all came to a head” with the band’s 3rd major label release, Feeding The Wolves. “When you feel like you’re being told to go through motions and jump through hoops, it takes the heart out of it,” he says. “We know that we need a hit and we understand that it’s important. However, as musicians, we’re not a band that says, ‘We’re going to make a hit.’ It’s better to do what comes naturally and then figure out the after-effect.” With that in mind, 10 Years created their most powerful songs to date for Minus The Machine, with Hasek again relying on personal experiences for his lyrics. “Everyone asks about my inspiration for lyrics, and the best thing I can give them is a very generic answer: life,” he says. “Life is the experience — it’s everything you go through: the ups, the downs. I tend to gravitate more toward the therapy method. I’m not great at writing happy pop songs. So, I usually get the negative emotions out through music. As a person, I’m very happy and thankful for my life, but when it comes to lyrics, it’s therapy for me.” One thing that won’t change is 10 Years’ connection with their fans. With the release of Minus The Machine, the band is looking forward to hitting the road, performing in close contact with their dedicated audience. “After the last touring cycle, we realized where we should strive to be, and that’s to be totally fine in the club environment,” says Hasek. “We don’t plan to chase after arena rock or amphitheaters. If things like that happen, then so be it, but we live and die by the loyalty of the club audiences. Our fans are loyal. They travel with us, and they want us to be loyal to ourselves. That’s what keeps them coming back. What we tried to do on this album is really give them what they want and what they need because they’ve been so good to us through the ups and downs of our career.” “First and foremost, when it’s all said and done, we’re proud of this album in its entirety,” he says. “That speaks volumes to us because we’re our own worst critics. We pick everything apart. An album is your child, it’s your baby, and you know it better than anyone. To sit back and be 100 percent proud of what we’ve accomplished is so gratifying, and we think everything else will fall into place. We hope that everyone will enjoy what we’ve tried to do.”

Drew Hansen

Drew Hansen

TOPIC-
Wednesday, August 28, marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legendary “I Have A Dream” speech. Drew Hansen’s THE DREAM: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Speech that Inspired A Nation, is the authoritative book on this speech. This scholarly, yet thoroughly accessible tribute to the distinguished career and prophetic vision of Martin Luther King, Jr. has been called “a great contribution to the history of the movement” by Representative John Lewis and “the best book in more than a decade on the movement’s best-known leader” by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Garrow. Author Drew Hansen is available for interviews to discuss the “I Have A Dream” speech. Hansen can talk about the behind-the-scenes story of how King wrote and delivered his most famous speech, the reactions to the speech both at the time and in the decades since, and the reasons why King’s speech was so powerful.

Description: The story begins with a brisk yet comprehensive account of King’s early career in Montgomery, Alabama --as pastor and reluctant head of the Montgomery bus boycott -- and the events leading up to the March on Washington (August 28, 1963). After a gripping re-enactment of the event -- which brought 250,000 by-and-large black Americans together, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, THE DREAM proceeds to an unprecedented and fascinating analysis of the speech itself, which contrasts King’s prepared speech with the one he delivered, and examines the final product on various levels; as a political treatise, a work of poetry, and a masterfully delivered and improvised sermon bursting with biblical imagery. While the opening chapters invoke the great successes of King’s career and uphold the traditional dual image of King as champion of civil rights and great visionary/man-of-faith, the book pays comparable attention to the self-acknowledged failures of Kings later years -- following the March, until his death in 1968. As the civil rights movement in the mid to late sixties began to suffer demoralizing setbacks, blacks across America, including other civil rights leaders, began to lose faith in King’s vision -- delivered with his speech at the March -- of an America in which “black men and white men...[would] be able to join hands.” As the author shows, King himself had all but lost faith in his vision, but never in God or the eventual salvation of his people, whether in this life or the next. Towards the end, the author examines the speech in its resurgence after King’s assassination. He draws attention to the ways in which the speech transfigured King’s image after his death. THE DREAM concludes with an insightful series of reflections on how the speech, beyond reshaping King’s image, “has slowly remade the American imagination.” Date Recorded: 8/27/2013

Aita

Aita

TOPIC-
SINGLE-Fear no Evil

Saved by His Grace, Aita is privileged to be called and counted worthy by God to use an unquenchable passion to spread the gospel of Christ through music in an edifying way to Him and benefit to mankind. He is a straight-forward singer with an unapologetic and uncompromising manner when it comes to serving the Lord. He combines his Christian life with fun and an ability to blend with others, regardless of background. His lyrics are clear, clean and simple for everyone to understand and designed for every facet of life. He transfers a confidence into people that make them feel good about themselves. Having gone through the Valleys of the shadow of death on October 3, 2012, Aita was resuscitated at Prince Georges Hospital Center, MD. While meditating on how his journey to the hospital bed began, he realized that death comes suddenly and he feared for his young family who would have been left alone to fend for themselves in a world filled with uncertainties. Tears rolling down his cheeks on realizing how blessed he is to be alive (though unworthy), the first song that ministered to his Spirit was "Fear No Evil"! Thus a motion was set to record it as an expression of his renewed belief in God's faithfulness; "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you." Luke 10:19. Aita believes that to appreciate God, one must sing a new song unto Him instead of recycling old ones, hence his resolve to do something new and different. His principal genre is Reggae, which is a form of music with a positive vibe. He also loves other appealing styles thus he has masterfully fused his Reggae style with other attractive world beats. Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth - Psalm 96:1 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. - Psalm 33:3 I will sing a new song to you, O God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you, - Psalm 144:1 Aita has been commissioned to glory!

Tm Franklin

T.M. Franklin

TOPIC-
MORE Summary: Ava Michaels used to think she was special. As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. She felt different from others her age, and just knew she was meant for something important. But, like most kids, Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn't so bad after all. Now a young college student, Ava begins to wonder if there were more to her childhood fantasies than she thought. She’s haunted by terrifying nightmares of a frightening man chasing her, determined to catch her, to take her—a huge hulk of a man with one blue eye and one green. Even during daylight hours, there are moments her hair stands on end with an uneasy prickle of awareness . . . and she just can’t shake the feeling that she’s being watched. Unable to decide if she’s imagining things or just plain crazy, Ava finds an unlikely ally in Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who comes to her rescue as a Physics tutor, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core. The thing is, Caleb’s not quite what he seems. In fact, he's not entirely human, and he's not the only one. Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Now they’re after her, bent on her capture or maybe even her extinction. Fighting to survive, Ava has to depend on Caleb to lead her through the strange new world opening up before her. A world of magic and mystery, where she learns she’s not actually normal . . . she's not even just special. She's a little bit more.

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,” she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.

Author of "DREAM DYNAMICS AND DECODING: Personal, Practical, Powerful Messages"

Janice Baylis, PhD., born in 1928, is a retired Reading Specialist Teacher and Community College Dream-study Instructor. In 1959 her car-pool passenger, Mabel, phoned at 6am asking to change their meeting spot to around the corner. That same morning at 7am Mabel was getting into Janice's car. They heard a loud CRASH! They rounded the corner and passed their regular meeting spot. There was a small airplane landed upside down in the corner of the store parking lot WHERE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN! Mabel explained that she had dreamed it during that night. Mabel's life-saving, pre-cognitive, warning dream started Janice on her life-long, self-directed and academic study of dreaming. Her student's dreams and the Edgar Cayce dream material focused Janice on the practical side of dreaming. At prodding from her students in 1977 she authored "SLEEP ON IT! The Practical Side of Dreaming". BA in Education, Occidental College 1950. MA in Psychology, Pepperdine University 1979. PhD. in Psychology, Columbia Pacifica University 1981. As a Reading Specialist Teacher Janice worked with the phonics system to teach children to read English. English has 44 sounds and 26 letters. Associating the 44 sounds with letters on a page is complex because each letter may have several sounds depending on what other letters are present. Working with this system tuned Janice's mind to see complicated associations. So, she learned to understand how dream thinking makes meaningful associations. This dream-mind thinking is what she teaches in "DREAM DYNAMICS AND DECODING: Personal, Practical Messages" Janice says, "Helping teach 3,000 children to read is my passport to Heaven."

A PLACE TO CALL HOME: THE LOST BOYS OF SUDAN by Thousands of Sudanese fled their villages between 1983 and 1987 due to savage attacks by the Sudanese soldiers and militias. Over two millions died and thousands were displaced. “A Place to Call Home” features six boys, ages 5-11 who fled South Sudan to escape genocide in 1987. Among them was Nathaniel Nyok (major character) who fled from a cattle camp: There could not be a sterner warning than the raging flames that scorched as they covered the atmosphere with blinding darkness. The fire was a dragnet, and if you were a Dinka boy, girl, man or woman, you knew what it meant. Flee your home and be butchered by assailants who were waiting with sharp knives, machetes, spears, and guns; flee and be captured and enslaved, or if you were lucky, flee and face a perilous journey. After dangerous journeys to Ethiopia, Sudan, and Kenya, Nathaniel and the five friends he met in Ethiopia found home in Atlanta. With the help of American friends, they found jobs including an acting job in Hawaii in the movie, “Tears of the Sun,” starring Bruce Willis. It was “fun in the sun” as they filmed, feasted on the set, and partied with Bruce Willis in clubs and his home for over three months. When they returned to Atlanta, Nathaniel, who completed his high school in Kenya attended Kennesaw State University, Georgia and graduated in 2011. He is now engaged in activities to build his new country. After years of negotiation for peace with the help of African rulers, international countries and organizations, politicians and celebrities such as former President, Jimmy Carter, George Clooney, and Don Cheadle, an independence for Southern Sudan was set for July 2011. Will independence be observed? Nathaniel wondered as he rushed to South Sudan for the event. The whole country was in jubilation and soon, the words, Freedom! Freedom!” echoed and reverberated. Soon, the huge South Sudan flag was hoisted. Tears flowed involuntarily. Those were the tears of the centuries, tears of memories of oppression, the violent deaths of our great ancestors, grandparents, parents, children, family, and community members. Yes! I could see faces and the freely flowing tears of generations and generations of people who’ve known nothing but terror, pain, and starvation. The author, Dr. Nkeonye Nwankwo met the six characters in the movie at the set of “Tears of the Sun” in 2002. They were actors and she was the consultant for the film. Fascinated by their story, Nwankwo befriended them and interviewed them for the novel. Nwankwo took exception to their stories, their culture, and their sustainable cattle rearing occupation. They were very happy and content people. Dr. Nwankwo started her career as a journalist with Daily Times of Nigeria. She left for further studies in the eighties to USA where she obtained her Master’s degree in Playwriting from Indiana University, Bloomington and Ph.D. in Dramatic Literature and Criticism from University of California, Los Angeles. Nwankwo is an award winning playwright, novelist, and educator. One of her plays won three categories of the NAACP theater award. Last year, Nwankwo separated from her teaching position at California State University, Northridge to become a fulltime writer.

NONPOINT
