TOPIC-The 1960's ushered in a new way of dealing with the mentally ill, deinstitutionalization. The process of aggressively seeking to empty the nation's mental hospitals led to destructive changes that included high rates of homelessness among the mentally ill, degradation of urban life and increases in the rates of violent crimes and death rates among the mentally ill.
